Back to Vacation Scholarship page

Our vacation scholarship program provides around 20 undergraduates a supervised introduction into research focussed mathematics or statistics. Successful candidates are matched with a member of staff according to their general strengths and interests, whether it be pure, applied, maths or stats. As well as learning new things for the purpose of research goals, the vacation scholars gain work force experience and have the chance to meet, socialise and make friends with students of similar interests. It is particularly recommended for students, either advanced second years, or current third years, who are seriously considering our honours or new generation masters programs.

Our department can offer projects across the disciplines of mathematics and statistics, with staff members active in the areas of

  • Pure mathematics: algebra, analysis, geometry, topology
  • Applied mathematics: colloids, granular media, mathematical biology, mathematical physics, industrial focussed problems
  • Computing and discrete maths: computer algebra, algorithm design and implementation, combinatorics
  • Operations research and optimization
  • Stochastic processes and applied statistics
