Professor Thompson held a Chair of Mathematics in the department for 30 years.
He now holds an honarary Professorship.
His research centred on statistical mechanics but in more recent times has focussed on modelling complex systems using ideas and techniques from Statistical Mechanics and Dynamical Systems theory. A collaborative ARC/Telstra grant (1996-1998) for example was concerned with modelling interactions between biological systems and electromagnetic fields. Modelling financial markets and the behaviour of market players are the other areas of interest where Statistical Mechanical methods have been applied. Collaborative projects with environmental scientists on the quantitative risk analysis, of genetically modified crops for example, using stochastic dynamical systems have also been tackled.
