New Department Top Up Scholarships for 2009

In 2009 the Department of Mathematics and Statistics is to offer up to two new top up scholarships for full time PhD students less than two years into their candidature. Each scholarship is worth $5,000 for the first year it is awarded, and will be renewed at the discretion of the scholarship committee. To be eligible for a scholarship, both present and prospective PhD students must write an application letter of up to one page in length.

For prospective PhD students, points to be addressed in the application letter must include:
  • What special academic qualities your candidature will bring to the Department.
  • What special personal qualities your candidature will bring to the Department.

For present PhD students, points to be addressed in the application letter must include:
  • A discussion of the progress of your thesis to date, how you believe it to be of special merit, and when you expect to submit.
  • A discussion of what you see as positive contributions to the interests of the department, and what you have done in this regard.

Present PhD students already receiving top up scholarships are not eligible to apply. Renewal of top scholarships that takes candidature beyond three years is not permitted.

The scholarships will be awarded on the criteria of
  • academic merit
  • projected contribution of the candidate to the wider interests of the Department
  • projected contribution of the research project towards future research in the Department.

Applications should be submitted to the Department's Academic Support Officer, directly in the General Office or electronically to the address given on the Departments postgraduate student page. For present PhD students the closing date is October 31st 2009. Prospective PhD students should submit their application at the time of applying for candidature.
