Chern Simons Theory with Complex Gauge Group and Topological String Theory of the A Polynomial

Abstract: I will discuss some recent physical conjectures of Dijkgraaf, Fuji, Manabe relating the two topics in the title. On one side is a (2+1) dimensional topological quantum field theory, giving invariants of three dimensional topology. On the other is a proposed mathematical description for the "B Model" in topological string theory, building on the recent work of Eynard and Orantin. Fortunately, both sides have (recent) rigorous mathematical descriptions, and this leads to a nontrivial relation between quantum invariants of knots, character varieties and complex geometry.
