Representations of the symmetric group
by Professor Stephen Bigelow
Abstract: The representation theory of the symmetric group is the study of homomorphisms from the symmetric group to a group of invertible matrices. If the entries in the matrices are in a field of characteristic zero, like the rational numbers, then there is a simple and beautiful classification of such homomorphisms. Over finite fields the situation is less well understood. There are some connections to knot theory that might
shed new light on the problem.
