Abstract: I will discuss an application of the Pontryagin Principle to determine a driving strategy that minimises fuel consumption subject to the train arriving on time at the next scheduled stop. I will discuss formulation of the problem, existence of an optimal strategy (albeit briefly), solution of the Pontryagin equations, the
calculation of a precise optimal speed profile, and an argument that might be used to establish uniqueness of the solution.
