Abstract: Granular materials abound. Soils, cereal and pharmacueticals
are a handful of many possible examples. These materials resemble,
at least qualitatively, ordinary matter: they can exist in solid or
fluid states. But the properties of granular states can differ
substantially from ordinary matter, and predictability remains a
challenge. Understanding granular behavior requires a detailed
examination starting at the smallest scales, and the development of
new statistical approaches. In this talk, I review some of the basic properties of granular materials and recent theoretical models. I will describe a series of novel experiments that test these theories and that point towards new statistical methods for granular materials.
