Abstract: I will define some generalisations of Khovanov's arc algebra. This algebra was introduced originally in a special situation by Khovanov in the course of constructing a categorification of the Jones polynomial. The various generalisations appear "in nature" in several different places. I will explain some of these, focussing on the most recently discovered one which is related to the walled Brauer algebra. This is joint with with Catharina Stroppel.
