Abstract: A great deal of knot theory and adjacent areas of mathematics over the past thirty years has been inspired by the Jones polynomial. In this seminar, we will define the Jones polynomial in three different ways and calculate a few examples. We will also discuss the coloured versions of the Jones polynomial, which play a crucial role in the statement of the volume conjecture.
