Some computations on hyperbolic 3-orbifolds

Abstract: With computer assistance, studying examples of hyperbolic 3-manifolds is
becoming easier. Programs such as Jeff Week's SnapPea allow the user to
find ideal triangulations for a link complement and check for a hyperbolic
structure. Andrew Casson's Geo can be used to find geometric structures
on closed 3-manifolds.

In this talk, we examine a new computer program Orb which we have
developed to study a large class of hyperbolic 3-orbifolds and
3-manifolds. We will discuss some of the techniques it employs to find
triangulations and hyperbolic structures, and to study 2-handle additions
on hyperbolic 3-manifolds with geodesic boundary. We also survey some data
already obtained on low volume hyperbolic 3-orbifolds.
