Force chains in sand piles: fractal structure

Abstract: Forces in static granular heaps have been investigated and
modelled in many ways. So far most emphasis has been the statistical
distribution of the local force. We study the spatial structure of the
forces. Inspired by equilibrium critical phenomena we expect that scaling
behavior and fractal dimensions are more likely to be universal than local
measures. We present a method to investigate the fractal properties of
spatial structures. Application to two-dimensional granular stacks show
universality of critical exponents and scaling function.
