Abstract: Grothendieck dreamed up motives in the 1960s as a way of explaining the relations between the many cohomology theories that can be attached to an algebraic variety. I will attempt to give an introduction to these ideas, including some illustration of their power, and describing some of the obstacles in the way of turning the theory from conjectural to established.
