Taking worm algorithms from spin models to Abelian lattice gauge theory

Abstract: With the recently found `worm algorithm' methods statistical systems like the Ising model or simple lattice quantum field theories can be simulated in a new way. The approach enhances greatly the achievable precisions for certain observables. We review the method and discuss our recent extension of it to simple gauge models.
