Abstract:
We will look (briefly) at the relationship between amoebas as studied
by Gelfand, Kapranov, Lind and others, tropical varieties, as defined
by Sturmfels and others and the geometric invariants of Bieri and
Strebel.

We will discuss some basic properties of these sets and show how they
can be used as powerful tools in group theory.
