Abstract: I will discuss the original Ramsey theorem for the integers, and various negative results which hold in some very general context for suitably homogeneous structures. These negative results ultimately led to a solution of a question by Pestov by providing a kind of oscillation theorem for groups of isometries of complete, separable metric spaces.
