Abstract: Cosserat materials exist all around us, from the ground we walk on to the skin of our bodies. A common property of said materials is that they possess a microstructure which acts to incorporate a local rotation of points as well as the translation assumed in classical theory. Consequently, the development of a thermodynamically consist set of higher-order micro-polar continuum relations for elastic media has widespread applications, ranging from biomechanics to granular materials. The focus of this presentation will be on deriving such equations, with emphasis on granular media.
