First-order transitions in two- and higher-dimensional n-vector models

Abstract: A strong version of the universality hypothesis suggests that all nearest-neighbour d-dimensional n-vector models behave the same as regards
their critical properties. I present a number of counterexamples, including
a 2-dimensional classical Heisenberg ferromagnet which display first-order transitions in the temperature.
