Abstract: Topologists have long since recognized that the volume of hyperbolic 3-manifolds is connected to some notion of topological complexity. "Mom technology" is our attempt to explain this connection, and in so doing to enumerate small-volume hyperbolic 3-manifolds. This talk will describe the notion of a "Mom structure", how it can be used to describe all 1-cusped hyperbolic 3-manifolds with volume <= 2.7, and how we hope to use it to enumerate small-volume closed manifolds.
