Abstract: This will be a basic introduction, focused on some of the
ingredients used in the study of the moduli space of curves. The moduli
space itself will hardly appear. The ingredients ---volumes of
polygons; lattice points in polygons; ribbon graphs; Laplace
transform; symplectic geometry; differential topology --- have broader
uses so they may be independently interesting.
