Abstract: The Farey fraction spin chain is one example of a set of closely related
one--dimensional models which are of interest in both statistical mechanics and number theory. For zero field, this spin chain exhibits a phase transition that is rather unusual as it lies on the border between first- and second-order. Utilising ideas from dynamical systems, the free energy of the model can be computed rigorously.
