Abstract: Beginning with some basic facts on ordering of groups, I will present,
with proofs, some connections between properties of a topological space
(emphasis on manifolds) and orderability of its fundamental group. Techniques
and applications will include Magnus expansions, a basic theorem of T. Farrell,
a knot-theoretical application of N. Smythe, the core theorem of P. Scott,
foliations and finite degree maps between 3-manifolds. Various open questions
will also be presented.
