Abstract: The interplay between two-dimensional Galois representations and modular forms in positive characteristic, as described by Serre's conjecture, has a variety of wonderful number-theoretic consequences. After an introduction to this circle of ideas, I will discuss some results on higher-dimensional generalizations, mostly from an algebraic-geometric point of view.
