Aperiodic Tilings and some of their combinatorial properties

Abstract: The unexpected discovery of crystalline materials with 'forbidden' symmetries in 1982 not only shook the foundations of crystallography,
but motivated a lot of activity in the mathematics of aperiodic order.
In this talk, I give a general introduction to the theory of aperiodic tilings,
and in particular explain how such tilings can be generated. This is followed
by a brief discussion of some combinatorial properties of planar aperiodic tilings, such as their shelling and coordination numbers, which can be analysed with methods from algebraic number theory.
