Combinatorial Bethe Ansatz

Abstract: This is an expository talk for nonspecialists on what is called
combinatorial Bethe ansatz, its origin, development and recent applications.
The relevant topics are fermionic character formulas for affine Lie algebras
(first found by Bethe himself), integrable cellular automata with quantum group
symmetry, ultradiscretization (tropical analogue) of several notions in classical
soliton theory, such as action-angle variables, inverse scattering transform,
tau functions, Riemann theta functions and so forth.
