Abstract: Pattern theorems in statistical mechanics of self-avoiding walks
date back to Kesten's 1963 paper where he proved a pattern theorem and used
it prove the existence of a ratio limit for the numbers of self-avoiding walks.
Since then new proofs of Kesten's pattern theorem have been developed and
pattern theorems have been proved for many other types of lattice objects
(including ribbons, animals, trees, discs, etc). This seminar will give some
examples of how pattern theorems have been used and will sketch some methods
of proof. Some open problems (ie systems for which we don't know how to prove a pattern theorem) will also be discussed
