Abstract: Kerr and Pichot have recently shown that a countable group has property (T) if and only if the weakly mixing actions are dense in the space of all measure preserving actions (of some standard atomless Borel probability space, such as the unit interval equipped with Lebesgue measure). In answer to a question by Kechris, we will show that a group has the Haagerup approximation property if and only if the strongly mixing actions are dense.
