by Dr Marty Ross
Abstract: Gottfried Leibniz described irrational numbers as "Monsters of the ideal world, almost amphibians between being and non-being."
Marty, in his talk, will consider some of the more famous of these monsters, giving some well-known, and some less well-known proofs of their irrationality. Such proofs are beautiful in themselves, and they provide insight into the nature of these strange, amphibious creatures.
