# Introduction to Gopakumar-Vafa Gauge/String Duality

*Abstract*: An important theme in modern mathematical physics is the idea that certain string theories are somehow dual to gauge theory. The most famous example of this is the Ads/CFT correspondence. If we consider field theories that are only topologically invariant (so-called topological quantum field theories), then gauge/string duality can actually be formulated mathematically. I will give an introduction to an important example of this idea that was originally formulated by Gopakumar and Vafa: namely, that the Gromov-Witten invariants of the resolved conifold can be recovered from the Witten-Reshetikhin-Turaev invariants of the three-sphere.
