Abstract: The Kazhdan--Lusztig basis/polynomials play important roles in the representation theory, algebraic geometry and combinatorics. I will review and discuss the basic properties of the maximal parabolic Kazhdan--Lusztig (KL) basis/ polynomials (for the general linear group). The talk is based on the collaboration with P.Zinn-Justin, where the idea comes from statistical physics.
Connections to combinatorial works by Lascoux--Schutzenberger and also by Brenti will be given. If time allowed, Geometric interpretation by Zelevinsky and KL basis/polynomials for the Hecke algebra of type B will be mentioned. No previous knowledge will be assumed.
