Abstract: Dwyer and Wilkerson developed p-compact groups as homotopical analogues of compact Lie groups. However, a corresponding character theory has yet to be studied. This talk will provide some background in character theory and homotopy theory and will discuss characters of p-compact groups in terms of their p-completed K-theory. The construction is based on invariants developed by Adams on the K-theory of classifying spaces of compact Lie groups.
