Abstract: (in collaboration with Fima Klebaner, Monash) Independence between individuals leads to the classical branching process dichotomy: extinction or exponential growth. Alas, relaxation of the independence requirement does not yield any chance of persistence forever. Still, populations which are subcritical above a size threshold, the carrying capacity of the habitat, and supercritical below it, can be expected to linger around the carrying capacity for an exponentially long time, in terms of the carrying capacity.
