Finitely presented abelian-by-nilpotent Lie algebras

Abstract: The theories of Lie algebras and of groups have had strong connections and analogies. My main research is to show that the structure of finitely presented abelian-by-nilpotent Lie algebras, however, is not closely related to the structure of finitely presented abelian-by-nilpotent groups. In the Lie algebra case we show that there are large classes of finitely presented abelian-by-nilpotent Lie algebras with quotients by their Fitting ideals nilpotent of any class. The analogue of this for groups has been proven false. I shall begin my talk by surveying the development in these areas since the studies of finitely presented metabelian groups.
