Computer Laboratories for Hire

Introduction

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics hires out laboratories in the Computer Laboratories and the services of the laboratory manager to integrate software. The two services are separate but it is recommended that any software required be integrated before finalising payment of the laboratory.

Laboratory machines

  • The Wilson Lab room G70 consists of 52 Dell Optiplex G260 computers running Windows XP Professional.
  • The Nanson Lab room 212 consists of 51 MicroPro P4 computers running Windows XP Professional.

Hiring times

The general hours for the Laboratories are: Monday-Friday 8:00am - 6:00pm.

Please check the
lab timetable for the availability before proceeding a booking.

Please note that the laboratories are generally in use by classes during University teaching times.

Cost of integrating software
A fee of $50 per hour ($50 minimum) is charged for the time required to install software. This includes:

The time required is estimated based on its size and the complexity of configuration which is judged either by trialing the installation on a computer or (if the software is unavailable) a fixed cost based on experience. Therefore we require the software at least two weeks in advance (preferably earlier) for this trial. Failure to supply software before this time may prevent integration of software or incur additional overtime costs.

Since certain software may be under license, we require the owner of the software to sign a form declaring that the use of their software on our machines is legal. The DECLARATION FOR INSTALLATION OF SOFTWARE is filled in at the time we receive the trial software.

Procedure

Hiring Laboratory
  • A pricing statement for the requested booking is sent by us and a tentative booking is placed on the laboratory for two weeks.
  • Confirming the booking depends on the client's category:
o Departmental clients need to send an internal order; and
o External clients need to sign the pricing request and deliver it with a 10% deposit to the Laboratory Manager. This is followed by an invoice for the remaining amount which needs to be paid within two weeks or at least two weeks before the booking (whichever is earlier).
  • Cancellations are accepted up to two weeks before the booking. After that a penalty of 10% of the hiring fee is charged and furthermore, no refund is possible for cancellations two days before the booking.

If any software is required, it is recommended that it be integrated before finalising the booking of the laboratory.

Integrating software
  • An invoice for the trial ($50 per software) and the licence declaration form are sent by us.
  • The software, the licence declaration and payment of the invoice needs to be completed and returned to us before proceeding.
  • If the software can be integrated, an invoice for the amount of time required to integrate the software is sent to you.
  • The invoice should be finalised at least two weeks before the booking to ensure the successful integration of the software.
  • Cancellation of software is accepted up to two weeks before the booking. After that, a refund is possible if the software hasn't yet been installed. Otherwise, no refund is possible.
