Windows

Lexpert

Platforms : Windows 9x, Windows 3.1, Windows CE
License : Free if you register
Author : Carol Ravichandran
Download : (1490K)
Website:http://www.carolravi.com (1.5 M)

This is a remarkable program for the serious study of words. It allows you to construct special lists and review them, print them or be quizzed on them. However the versatility can be daunting. The lexicon is wider in scope than Our Words, giving many words of 10 or more letters.

Lexicons for UK, US and combined are provided with the program.

TEA for Windows

Platform : Windows 9x
License : Shareware : 20 pounds sterling
Author : Ross Beresford
Download : teaw1432.zip (2.3 M)
Website :http://www.bryson.demon.co.uk

A handy program which allows quick lookups of anagrams, hooks etcetera. You specify anagrams by preceding a string with a semicolon eg. ;parties (or ;parties. if you include a blank). You can ask for patterns such as *gry or .hat. It comes with the UK Advanced Cryptics Dictionary which is comprehensive, but not perhaps desirable for Scrabble players since it includes words with capital letters and hyphens. You may use the evaluation version for 14 days. After that, you feel guilty.

An alternative lexicon based on Our Words is OurWTea.zip (646K)

WordFinder

Platform : Windows 9x
License : Free
Author : Phil Moore
Download : wordfinder21.exe (1.5 M)
Website : http://www.wordfinder.co.uk
WordFinder has been written by a UK Scrabble player. It allows you to search for patterns, anagrams, consonant-heavy or light words. It is powerful and easy to use. The supplied data are suitable for international English Scrabble.
MS-DOS

LOOK

Platform : MS-DOS
License : Free
Author : Barry Harridge
Download : LOOK2000.zip (233K)
A program with a limited but useful purpose - judging the allowability of words in a Scrabble tournament. The latest version (version 2000) includes the datafile OURWORDS.DSQ with all allowable words up to 9 letters, and includes British and North Americon lexicons combined (but switchable). The data file is stored in a special squashed format. You do not need to download this file separately since it is included in the program distribution.

TEA for DOS

Platform : MS-DOS
License : Free
Author : Ross Beresford
Download : Tea102.zip (86K)
Website :http://www.bryson.demon.co.uk
An earlier version of TEA, no longer supported by the author, but which is free. Many people prefer this because it is powerful, easy to use and shows many words together on the screen display. Scrabble players will want to use these data files
OurTEA.zip (283K)
Palm

WordFind Pro

Platform : Palm
License : Shareware ($15 US)
Author : Graham Wheeler
Download : wfpro26demo.zip (223K)
Website :http://www.bradygirl.com/WordFind/
This program runs on the Palm handheld (even on the cheapest model : the Palm m100) and is thus able to be a shirt-pocket resource, available for instant post-mortems. It quickly finds anagrams, even with a blank or two, and can also incorporate constraints such as "must end in S".
As a plus, it can also help with codewords (a crossword grid with letters coded as numbers) and can find multiword anagrams such as BARRY HARRIDGE = GRAB HAIRDRYER.
The registered Pro version of the program allows you to use alternative dictionaries. Scrabble players (other than North America) will want to use this data file :
ourwords.zip (354K)
