tourist information

The Tourism Victoria website has information on just about everything to do in and around Melbourne.

Melbourne enjoys a temperate climate with crisp winters. Melbourne is seldom unbearably cold, and heavy rain is rare at this time of the year. During the day, it can be cold and cloudy, but you can also experience days of calm, sunny weather. There may be frost or fog at night. The coldest day of the year typically has a maximum temperature of about 9ºC (48ºF). A current Melbourne weather forecast is provided by the Bureau of Meteorology. You can also view the observations from the last 72 hours.

The local newspaper is The Age.

the arts

A good starting point to see some art is the Ian Potter Centre of the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) at Federation Square, which has a great collection of Australian art. Many commercial, small galleries can be found in nearby Flinders Lane. The NGV proper is located at 180 St Kilda Road across the river.

Melbourne's theatres include Malthouse Theatre, Red Stitch Actors Theatre, the Melbourne Theatre Company and The Hayloft Project. Theatre reviews and commentary can be found at Alison Croggon's blog.

For dance and classical music, check out the The Arts Centre. Live jazz is performed at Bennetts Lane. Local and international acts of diverse genres perform at the Corner Hotel.
