Stuart Walsh

PhD Student
University of Melbourne
Graduated 2001

In 2001, I finished a double degree in Arts and Science with an honours year in Mathematics. In 2002, I began a PhD in Applied Mathematics at the University of Melbourne, working in conjunction with the US Army Corps of Engineers, Engineer Research and Development Center, Vicksburg MS.

My research is focused on the development of new mathematical models for granular media. Granular materials are all around us - examples include sand piles, coffee grains, pharmaceutical powders and even asteroid belts. The problems encountered when modelling these types of materials are both challenging and exciting, with ample opportunities for new research available to young mathematicians.

Everyday I use the mathematical skills I learnt as an undergraduate. One of the most surprising and rewarding aspects of my work is the wide variety of mathematics that I encounter. I have found that my undergraduate study has trained me to assimilate ideas from what are often quite disparate areas of mathematics, in addition to providing me with the technical background I need for my research.
