Additional Information:
I have been a tutor for students in high school university level studies since 2010. My tutorials generally are tailored to suit the student. Whether they have problems that they want to go through or whether they want to focus on concepts. I personally find that going through a problem, to understand the concepts is the best way to learn maths. That’s how I generally teach students. My students have found themselves successful in their studies. A student of mine that I was tutoring in Mathematical Methods from 2015 – 2016, had finished year 12 with an ATAR of 99.80 and a study score of 42 in Mathematical Methods
I am someone who’s been passionate about mathematics since high school. I completed high school in 2008 and went on to start a BSc majoring in mathematical physics (2009 2012). In 2012, I enrolled in a Master of Science in Applied Mathematics/Mathematical Physics (2012 2014). My research project was supervised by Prof. Paul Pearce and the title of my thesis was “Towards Logarithmic DType Models” (thesis link here http://bit.ly/2lUXYk6). As of 2016, I have enrolled in a Master of Engineering Degree (Civil Engineering).
Kind regards,
Joel Gill

How to be a better student of mathematics?
For school students, becoming familiar with mathematical ideas by doing lots of repetitive drill exercises and then checking the answers at the back of the book is most important. A certain amount of memorization is usually required especially in the earlier years of schooling. Once this stage has been mastered*, advanced high school and Uni students should seek understanding in the form of intuition for mathematical ideas and principles. This is essential in the learning and writing of mathematical proofs which becomes the main focus for advanced second year Uni students and beyond. Processing and storing complex mathematical ideas takes time. If you are willing to put in the effort then guidance from an experienced and caring tutoring will make sure that you move as quickly as possible on the path to mathematical success.
*Students who have done poorly in this initial stage should seek urgent help as they will find it harder and harder to learn mathematics in higher year levels.
What are the benefits of receiving regular maths tuition from me?
Learning in a classroom or lecture environment is often ineffective due to the simple but unavoidable inconvenience of large studentteacher ratios. Gaps in understanding can quickly arise and if not filled will lead to confusion and ultimately lower grades. I will correct misunderstandings and seal gaps in your knowledge in order to prepare you to achieve higher grades. Moreover, due to the one to one interaction, I will get to know you over time and hence will present the material to you that best suits your learning style and needs. In the week leading up to tests and exams I will gladly correspond via email with the student any extra questions they may have but did not ask during the tutorial.
I am a friendly, patient and reliable tutor. For all my adult life, I have been (and will continue to be) an academic and educator in mathematics and hence have acquired a very broad knowledge base. I can therefore not only help students more effectively do problems and assignments but also lead them to see the ‘big picture’. This often increases the student’s appreciation and enjoyment for the subject and they are more motivated as a result.
Note: Most students will benefit a lot from preparing before the school term or University semester begins. I am happy to help students prepare for subjects during the school or University breaks and make sure they get an advantageous head start.
I have tutored over 500 satisfied students by helping them to achieve the best results possible. My rate for one to one tuition is $60 per hour. Tutoring times are by appointment.

I have a Bachelor of Science degree, majoring in Pure Mathematics and Statistics & Stochastic Processes. Currently, I am the President of Melbourne University Mathematics & Statistics Society 20152016
I believe that a good teacher can teach students concepts and help them with homework but a GREAT teacher can teach students how to learn so that they can achieve results even when he is no longer there. Unlike many other tutors, whose teaching only have short term impact, I aim to have lifelong impacts to my students by teaching them principles of success & the science of achievement beside course content!
From my observation after 4 years of teaching experience, most VCE students work hard, but it is actually what they work on that causes them to overstress and underperform i.e making beautiful note summaries; rewritten textbook questions, chitchatting with friends thinking that they are doing group discussion etc… . They don't know what to focus on, they paddle like crazy in the sea of activities; doing all things that they can touch their hands on and ended up being exhausted and giving up altogether. VCE students don't lack hard work, what they lack is clarity and focus!
In Maths study ( and many others subjects), understanding the concept thoroughly and rinsing & repeating themselves with practice exams are the only few things that students should focus on to achieve outstanding results.
One of the best examples was when I studied Probability at Melbourne University. With so much passion for Mathematics, I studied Probability day and night, putting my hand on all possible materials that I could found, achieved 91 as a result. I was quite happy with my score until I learned that my friend, let's call her Shania achieved 96. I was even more startling to know that she achieved this score while overloading doing 5 subjects at Melbourne Uni and skipping Probability lectures every Friday ( while I attend all Probability lecture & even going to most consultation of the subjects). "How could it be possible?" I asked myself , " how can she achieve more while doing less". I asked her one day and it was painful for me to know that while I studied much harder than Shania, she did 14 practice exams while I ( the overwork student) did only 7 practice exams of Probability and that is what make the difference between our scores.
What can I offer you as a tutor?
. Course notes that I personally written ( obviously ) with selective & modified questions from VCE exams paper for each topic that I teach. This is designed so that you can see finishing VCE Maths exams are possible for yourself
. Strategies to achieve greatly in other subjects. This is the results of me talking to many friends who achieved 50 raw score in subjects such as English, P.E, H.H.D, Physics & Chemistry etc, "success leaves clues" :)
. Unique and indepth understanding of Mathematics. As a student who has completed University degree in Mathematics at Melbourne uni, I understand Mathematics at a much deeper level than other VCE tutors. I can provide you with deep explanation and show you how to connect mathematical concepts together. This would make your understanding of Maths solid, allowing you to remember the concept & pattern for life.
Bonus: Probably the best of all, a proven goals achievement system that I've adopted from Publisher of SUCCESS Magazine Darren Hardy that helps you to achieve what Darren calls the BIG HAIRY AUDACIOUS GOALS of your life & career. If you are committed to the system, you can't help but see your achievement coming to pass!
Hobbies & personal interested:
I believe in God and believe in giving as "giving starts the receiving process" ! I spend my Sunday at Church helping out with service, worshipping God.
Being President of Melbourne University Mathematics & Statistics Society, I enjoy organizing Maths & career events so that students can have fun, enjoy learning and get valuable information about employment & Maths industry related opportunities.
I run my own business and in my free time I do lots of volunteer & attending social and networking event, reading the Bible and Personal Development books.

Hi there! My name is Ricky and I have over 10 years of teaching experience at some of the top high schools in Victoria. I am a fully qualified teacher for VCE/IB Specialist Mathematics and Mathematical Methods, and am a VCAA Examiner for both these subjects, 5 years and counting.
With over a decade of experience, I am confident in my abilities to not only teach, but to also enable my students to reach their full potential. My goal as a teacher is to engage my students, and make the content both interesting and accessible. I am a cheerful and approachable person. Whilst maintaining the integral complexity of the subject, the atmosphere of my lessons is lighthearted and encouraging, so I hope that all my students will be able to find enjoyment in learning. I also place an emphasis on a thorough and indepth understanding of foundation knowledge, thus students will feel fully prepared and confident to face more complex concepts in the future. Whilst it may sound like I can be easygoing, I will also seek to challenge my students with more difficult, examstyle questions in effort to emulate what they will face during the end of year exams. With tips and tricks on how to tackle commonly made mistakes, students will be capable of achieving outstanding results.
Student achievements in 2014: • 96% achieved ATARs of 95+ • 90% achieved 40+ in VCE Maths Methods • 92% achieved 7 in IB High Level Maths • 95% achieved 4550 in VCE Spec. Maths
My success as a teacher not only lies in the results of my students, but also as the director of two independent and successful coaching institutions. I am the founder and Chief Lecturer at RL Tuition located on Lonsdale St in the Melbourne CBD. We specialise in VCE/IB subjects such as Maths, Chemistry, English and more, including classes for students from Primary School to the Junior years of High School. I run private tuition ($5090 per hour) and group lessons during the weekend ($50 for a 2 hour lesson). Students who are unsure are welcome to attend a FREE full length session (2 hours), and will also get a bonus gift if they indicate which RL Tuition advertisement they saw during enrollment. All my students will receive a comprehensive bound notes book which covers an entire year’s worth of content, written by myself. The layout and content are both succinct and indepth, a physical oxymoron of sorts. It includes formulas, challenging questions and answers, shortcuts and much more to ensure that students will be familiar with the entirety of the subject. The notes are used throughout the year, but can also be used during the end of year exams as a valuable bound reference.
I have had the privilege of teaching thousands of students over the years, and I look forward to welcoming you too!

Subjects Taught (VCE): Years 710 Maths Mathematical Methods General Maths Further Maths

Location/s: Western and Northern Suburbs, and Central Melbourne (CBD) I am available weekends and weekdays, so feel free to contact me to work out a time
Additional Information: I am a Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Mathematics and a Post Graduate in Mathematical Statistics. Certified banker and accounting professional, I have above 10 years of teaching experience. A good understanding of the subject and an ability to understand the base knowledge level of the student is my core strength. I charge $50 for onetoone tutoring ($40 for the first session), $40/person for the group of two. I do not encourage a group bigger than two. My philosophy of teaching is to make the basic concepts clear to the student, develop a self interest in the student and then build from there, rather than preparing the student just for exams. I aim to make a sustained impact to my students by making them realise the benefits of subject in daytoday and professional life.
