In 1968 Strassen's showed that it is possible to multiply two 2x2 matrices using 7 elementary operations and not 8 as the naive algorithm does. In 1973 Strassen's conjecture was stated: is it possible to multiply two pairs of matrices in a more efficient way rather than multiply the each pair independently?
Strassen's conjecture is still open today and it is now stated using tensors. The main tools to study the conjecture come from algebra and geometry and we will see how algebraic geometry plays a central role. We will also meet some of the most recent advances on Strassen's conjecture made in 2014 by Carlini, Catalisano, Chiantini, Geramita and Woo.
