Title: The symmetries of string theory

Abstract: Let M be a manifold. We will consider theories of particles and strings moving in M, the string theory formalism is captured by the notion of (extended) sigma model on M. While the symmetries of a particle theory form a group, we will see that the symmetries of an extended sigma model form a 2-group. An important example are the Wess-Zumino-Witten theories, whose symmetries are the string 2-groups. This is joint work with Matthew Ando.
