Title: Topological invariants of Azumaya algebras
Speaker: Ben Williams (University of British Columbia)
Abstract: An Azumaya Algebra is a sheaf of algebras that is locally isomorphic to a matrix algebra. These are generalizations of, and relate to, central simple algebras over a field. I will explain how algebraic topological techniques can be used to furnish obstructions to the existence of Azumaya Algebras of prescribed types, and how one uses these topological obstructions to construct counterexamples in algebra.
