620-331 Reference Books
There are several reference books for this subject that previous lecturers have recommended:
- A.J. Roberts A one-dimensional introduction to continuum mechanics, World Scientific
- W.E. Williams Partial differential equations, Oxford Applied Mathematics and Computing Science Series, Clarendon Press
- R. Haberman Elementary applied partial differential equations, Prentice Hall
- F.B. Hildebrand Advanced calculus for applications, Prentice Hall
- G. Stephenson Partial differential equations for scientists and engineers, Longman
I have arranged for the following two books which I quite like to be available on short-term loan from the
Mathematical Sciences Library from 12 March 2008
(two-hour loan, or overnight loan due back at 10.00 a.m. if taken out after 3.15 p.m.):
- G.B. Whitham Linear and Nonlinear Waves, Wiley (1974).
Read only chapter 1,pp. 19-36 and chapter3, pp. 68-75. Note that Whitham plots his space-time diagrams with
time horizontal, which is not the convention used in my lectures.
- Y. Pinchover and J. Rubinstein An Introduction to Partial Differential Equations,
Cambridge University Press (2005).
