Announcements:

9/6: I hope the exam went well! I have now put up the exam questions and solutions in the 'Previous exams' section. Note that the solutions may be subject to change (if I discover a mistake)! I also have all the exam papers and will be marking them over the next few weeks.

This is my last posting on this site (for 2009). I hope you all enjoyed the course and learnt something! -- YBC.

8/6: I have now marked and sent out comments/marks for the group project written reports. If you have not received yours, please let me know. Note also that I will be posting the exam questions and full(-ish) solutions once the exam has been done. Good luck! -- YBC.

28/5: I will be handing out an exam information sheet tomorrow, but you can also find it here. Assignment 3 solutions are also up. -- YBC.

27/5: The project presentations are over! I have sent out feedback to everyone who presented, hopefully in time to make last-minute changes to the report! If you do not receive your feedback, let me know and I will get it to you (I used the e-mail address you provided when the groups were formed, or your ugrad address if I had it). This Friday (29th May) is of course the last lecture, and I strongly encourage you to come, as I will be (among other things):

  1. Handing back assignment 3;
  2. Talking about assignment 3;
  3. Talking about the exam;
  4. Conducting the Quality of Teaching survey; and of course
  5. Accepting project reports!
So I hope to see you all there, for one last time! -- YBC.

22/5: The next practice class (26th May) will also be held in Russell Love, but will feature a full quota of student presentations. I hope to see you all there! Also don't forget that assignment 3 is due this coming Monday (25th May), and the presentation reports are due on the Friday of next week (29th May). -- YBC.

19/5: Student presentations start today! This is a chance to explore the practical side of linear models with your fellow students, so please come to as many as you can. Today we will also have a short practice class in Russell Love. -- YBC.

14/5: Assignment 3 is up! I will also hand it out in lectures tomorrow. -- YBC.

13/5: As advertised, practice class 11 (19th May) will be held in the Russell Love Theatre. There will be a student presentation to kick it off, but please don't use that as an excuse to turn up late! -- YBC.

11/5: Late this time... Practice class 10 (12th May) will be held in the Nanson Laboratory. This will be the last R practice class for the course, so don't miss it! I will also be returning assignment 2 on Wednesday (the 13th) and handing out assignment 3 on Friday (the 15th). Sorry for the late return of assignment 2! -- YBC.

8/5: I've added a link to the LATEX  code for the slides for estimation in the full rank model, in the lectures slides page. -- YBC.

29/4: This time, I am getting in early. Practice class 9 (5th May) will be held in Russell Love Theatre again. Also don't forget to hand in your Assignment 2 on Monday (the 4th)! -- YBC.

27/4: A somewhat late announcement that practice class 8 (28th April) will be held in the Russell Love Theatre. -- YBC.

24/4: There are a couple of small changes to Assignment 2, as specified in today's lecture. You are allowed to use R for statistical distributions (such as finding p-values), and in question 3, the null hypothesis should be $H_0: \mathbf{\beta} = \mathbf{\beta}^*$. The web version is now corrected. -- YBC.

24/4: Assignment 2 is up! -- YBC.

20/4: I have created a schedule for the project presentations (on the projects page). The table is now listed in order of talk times. Check that you are on the list, and if you cannot make your talk time, let me know as soon as possible! I tried to make the schedule so that similar projects are grouped together, for those who are interested in certain subjects. So if someone cannot make it, more than just that group might be rescheduled. Also, if your project has not yet been approved, or has no title, contact me immediately to sort it out. -- YBC.

19/4: Hope you all had a good Easter break! We reconvene in the Agar Theatre at 10am tomorrow (Monday the 20th). I hope to see you all there! -- YBC.

9/4: Practice class 7 (21st April) will be held in the Nanson Laboratory. Have a good Easter break! -- YBC.

6/4: I have sent comments on the project outlines to the group leaders and asked them to distribute them amongst the group. If you have not received comments, let me know and I'll pester your group leader, or if you are a leader, I'll re-send it. I have reserved approval for some of the projects -- if you are in one of those groups, please discuss the issues I have raised and get back to me. I'm also happy to discuss any aspect of the project. -- YBC.

4/4 Two updates in one day! There has been a substantial amount of stuff added to the website, involving assignments, practice classes, and the SSLC survey. Check it out! -- YBC.

4/4: Public Service Announcement: Daylight savings time ends tonight (set your clocks back one hour). So if you turn up at the lecture on Monday morning one hour early, you know what happened! Also, this Friday (10th of April) is Good Friday, so there will be no lecture on that day or the week after. The next lecture after the 8th of April is on the 20th of April. Finally, I will be handing back Assignment 1 on Monday's lecture (the 6th), so be there! -- YBC.

2/4: Practice class 6 (7th April) will be held in Russell Love Theatre. This practice class will involve a bit more proof questions, since we do not have the computational power of R available to us. -- YBC.

29/3: Practice class 5 (31st March) will be held in the Nanson Laboratory, at the time of the usual practice class. This is to give you some practice with R before the projects really get into gear. Speaking of projects, don't forget to hand in your outline on Monday, and make sure it has a snappy title that I can put up on the projects page! -- YBC.

25/3: Just a reminder that both Assignment 1 and the group project outline are due on next Monday, the 30th of March. The best time to hand them in would be at the lecture, or just after; there is an assignment box, but I prefer getting it directly. -- YBC.

23/3: Practice class 4 (24th March) will be held in Russell Love Theatre. Problems are up -- this practice class is titled "Bring Your Calculators", so you should! -- YBC.

22/3: There is a mistake in assignment 1, question 2(b). Instead of ``Describe the distribution of $\mathbf{y}^TA\mathbf{y}$", it should be ``Describe the distribution of $\frac{1}{4}\mathbf{y}^TA\mathbf{y}$". The web version is now corrected. Many apologies to anyone who has actually attempted the question! -- YBC.

18/3: Assignment 1 is up! Get it while it's hot! Also don't forget to hand in a plagiarism declaration form, and come to next Wednesday's lecture (the 25th) for the SSLC survey. -- YBC.

17/3: It was good to see a couple of you at the third year barbeque, although I should have advertised it more so that more people showed up! Anyway, solutions to practice class 3 are up. Note that in question 4, you are allowed to use the preceding theorem (apologies to those who tried to prove it from scratch!). -- YBC.

15/3: Practice class 3 (on the 17th of March) will be held in the usual place, Russell Love Theatre. Problems are up for those interested! Also be sure to come to Friday's lecture (well, come to all the lectures, but especially Friday!) because I shall be handing out Assignment 1 then. -- YBC.

6/3: Just a reminder that Labour Day (Monday, 9th of March) is NOT a university holiday. We will be having a lecture that day, same time, same place. Another reminder: if you are not in a project group, let me know now! -- YBC.

4/3: Project groups updated. -- YBC.

3/3: The project groups have been formed. Please navigate to the project page and check that you are on the list (if you are in a group). If not, let me know. If you are not in a group, contact me before it is too late! -- YBC.

2/3: Good to see you all at the lecture today! I have added the lab time, SSLC representative details, and a link to the plagiarism sheet onto the website. The plagiarism sheet is under `Assignments'. -- YBC.

22/2: The first practice class will be held in the Russell Love Theatre, on the 3rd of March, 2:15pm. This will be quite a short class as I expect not to have taught anything yet! However, it is important that you make this class as we will be forming groups for the group projects (so it will be more of a `meet and greet'). If you cannot make it, let me know and I will try to make other arrangements. -- YBC.

20/2: Welcome to Linear Models for 2009! I will be using this webpage to post useful information for the course, including (but not restricted to) lecture slides, assignments, and general information. Be sure to check here regularly! (scroll down to the end of the page to view the other sections) -- YBC.
