Department of Mathematics and Statistics 620-629 Integrable Models
Semester 2, 2009

The most elementary and at the same time most comprehensive introduction to Classical Integrable Models from the algebraic point of view that we are interested in is given in the textbook

Solitons: Differential equations, symmetries and infinite dimensional algebras,
by T Miwa, M Jimbo and E Date

The authors of this book are not only top world class mathematicians, but they have also played a very central role in the development of the subject. To be as concrete as possible, the lectures will closely follow the above textbook.

If you plan to take this course for credit and/or seriously wish to learn the subject, it is highly recommended that you buy the textbook. A copy can be bought online for less than A$70.00 (including shipping).

You may also consider buying a a new copy at a reduced price or a used copy (usually in very condition) from one of the following

Solitons by Miwa, Jimbo and Date, at (possibly) reduced prices

In my experience, it takes between one and two weeks to receive (most) books that are shipped from the Europe or the US. Alibris is particulary fast, and I have received (many) books from them within a week of order (faster than I had the chance to go from my office to the maths library!). Note that the prices quoted in the above link are in Australian dollars (with the current exchnage rates, it is not a bad time to buy books online!).

A copy of the textbook will be on reserve in the Maths and Stats library. Students will need to take notes in the lectures and also to consult the textbook.

The book was originally written in Japanese and quite a few typos crept into the English translation. Most of these are obvious. Some are not. A list of all known typos are made available in Typos. I have confirmed with the authors that these are indeed typos!
