A common problem with postgraduate study is the possibility of becoming isolated from the 'real world'. Particularly with high level mathematics, it becomes increasingly difficult to relate your work to outsiders. It is for this reason that STAMP aims to create a postgraduate network within the department - so that postgrads can share their experiences with others in the same situation. Strengthening these links creates a sense of community within which individuals can draw support from their peers. As a happy consequence, this environment leads to academic contacts being established and knowledge pooled.
STAMP also provides a voice for the postgraduate students in the department. Issues identified by postgrads as being important will be followed up with the Department or relevant body. In addition, members of STAMP regularly contribute to departmental initiatives, including various committees and information sessions.
